A City on a Hill
"You are the light of the world -- like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden"
Jesus spoke these words during his famous sermon on the mount which appears in the book of Matthew in the Christian Bible. This collection of Jesus' teachings provide a brief and yet thorough introduction into the teachings of Jesus and thus the Christian faith. If you have an opinion about Jesus, be it positive or negative, but have not read any of his teachings then I challenge you to do it now, starting with this passage (Matthew Chapters 5-7).
Unfortunately many people throughout history have misrepresented the Christian faith and Jesus himself. Christianity is by no means unique in this, as people have misrepresented and manipulated every other faith, philosophy and worldview to reach their own ends. People manipulate, people misrepresent, people hurt, kill, steal, lie and cheat. People sin. This is the message of the Bible, not the result of the Bible. None of this would change if the world was devoid of religion, for people would still be here.
"I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ."
I have often seen this quote used as an attack on Christianity but I resonate with its message entirely. People are the problem, not Jesus. To be a Christian is to seek to live like Jesus for He said "anyone who loves me will obey my teaching" and "not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."Many call themselves Christians, but by Jesus' own definition, many are not. "A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them." It is not Jesus' fault that people are hypocrites, it is their own.
If a Christian or church has turned you away from Jesus then I encourage you to go to the original accounts of his life and teachings in the Bible and find out for yourself who Jesus was and what he taught. Don't be ignorant and close minded; be willing to seek out answers for yourself. There is truth out there, life is not meaningless, and you are not the result of random chance. You have been created and made to love and be loved by your maker God and by your fellow human being, God’s greatest creation.
When asked what the greatest commandment was Jesus replied "Love the lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind" and without hesitation he went on to add "and the second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself."
I will seek to live this out until the day I die and go to be with Him. I am a city on a hill and I will not be hidden.
